This Week...

WELCOME BACK

This week we are writing our rainforest animal reports and preparing our presentations for parents! The class is working so hard to complete their animal research on Rainforest Animals.  Their teacher is very excited too!

S.T.A.R. Folder

Please look for your child’s S.T.A.R. folder every day. STAR stands for: “Students Taking Academic Responsibility,” It is your child’s responsibility to bring the STAR folder to and from school every day. Please make sure to review and sign each weekend.

~Thank you~

Homework

Homework Policy

Homework is meant to be an extension of what we do in the classroom. In first grade, the purpose of homework is to help students develop organizational skills, learn responsibility, and reinforce skills learned in school.  It is also a time to involve parents in the educational process. Homework is time well spent on important skills, rather than "busy work!"

First graders are expected to spend time each night practicing their reading, sight words, and weekly word (spelling) pattern. On Monday, there will be a homework activity sheet sent home along with the word  pattern for the week.  It will be due back on Friday. It will include integrated homework choices, a place to record reading minutes, and a word study (spelling) list. Occassionally, I may attach a math game or activity we have learned in class.  Also, if a student needs extra math practice, he or she will bring home extra math practice sheets and/or activities to help reinforce the skills we are learning in class. Notes on current projects, word study practice choices, and ideas for optional math practice will be listed here. The homework sheet will also be posted here if you need a copy. Be sure that your child reads 15-20 minutes a night!

Homework Components

  1. Tic-Tac-Toe Homework page
  2. Daily at home reading (15-20 min) and can include book bag books, library books, Raz kids, assigned reading street books, and                 weekly sight word practice.
  3. Word Work (Spelling) pattern list: ideas listed in the STAR homework binder and on the word work webpage. Individual lists can be             found on Spelling City.

Please practice each list of words with your child for the assessment on Friday. The purpose of "spelling words"                              is not to  just memorize these words; it is to help teach the pattern so children can apply it to daily writing.

4.  Monthly Family Project  August - ME Bags

5.  Optional: Math worksheets and Math games for additional practice and challenge.

6. Vocabulary: Contraction Game:
